xizi she knows

A significant part of maintaining my sanity and sense of self while living in the police state that was life on my IMB team was the music into which I escaped.  Similarly, specific music has been a solace and help this past year as I’ve struggled to find words.  This is one of those songs.

Slow down
From a thread of sky
Slow down
To the warp and weft your being
Slow down
You’re beautiful, graceful, like no other
Pretty damned good as you are

Slow down
Friend of mine
Slow down
In a terrible hurry for change
Slow down
As you unravel your marvels
From evergreen gardens
Remember we loved you this way

a melody

A theme song of sorts for the next couple years.  I’m on a path that seems now to run through Central Asia for a time.  I’ve had Abigail Washburn’s albums for many months, and this tiny melody caught me immediately, compelling repeated listening.  It is a coincidence, probably, but one that struck me as quite beautiful.

songs for the end of a summer

The Lonely Forest – ‘Live There’

This song is where I am going.  As summer heat envelops the midwest in waves, I’ve been thinking about cool northern beaches and clear lakes and pine forests and mountains.   and, as the song says, “…you’re much too safe; quit weighing the pros and cons, just create.”

Hem – ‘Half Acre’

Beth introduced me to this song a couple weeks ago and I’ve listened to it so often since, the feeling of it has come to represent this summer for me, with all its joy and sadness and hope and disappointment.
